“(…) To Crius and Eurybia, daughter of Sea (Pontus) were born Astraeus, Pallas, and Perses; to Iapetus and Asia was born Atlas (…)” (Bibliotheca, book I, II), who was condemned by Zeus to carry the celestial vault on his shoulders for eternity.
In the drypoint, Atlas is depicted with the Earth globe on his shoulders and he is inscribed in a dark background with Prussian blue reflections. The present work may be mistaken for a dark-manner engraving whereas it is a simple drypoint but a very intricate one in the area of the dark background. (Alessandra Durante)
