At the centre of the scene, Artemis is taken by surprise by Actaeon while she is having a bath. That same Theban hero appears transformed into a stag in the right bottom corner as he is devoured by his dogs.

“Now while Diana was bathing there in her stream, as usual, the grandson of Cadmus, who had for the present abandoned his hunting, came wandering with hesitant steps through this wood which he had never seen before. He reached the grove – so were the fates directing him (…)” (Metamorphoses, III, 173-177).
Actaeon was a Theban hero. While on a hunt, he saw Diana – Artemis for the Greek – intent on having a bath. The furious goddess transformed him into a stag and he was later devoured by his own dogs. (Alessandra Durante)
