The engraving sums up the VIII canto of the Iliad in which the Olympians ask for the chance to intervene in the war. Such request is denied by Zeus who, in turn, imposes a truce. The artist has chosen to represent such debate by rendering decorating symbols on a kylix (a wine cup). At its centre there are two geometrical eyes, which are probably Zeus’s who is watching everything from above and making decisions. The artist has matched every symbol to a god and they are all around Zeus making their requests. (Alessandra Durante)
