Is Dante’s verse “libertà va cercando, ch’è sì cara” (“He seeketh Liberty, which is so dear”) (Purg., I, 71) suitable for those who are imprisoned in the cage or is it the conquest of those who consider themselves out of the great ‘prison’? The work urges to a multiplicity of assessments.
Liberté reminds of The Haywain Triptych (1503-04 ca.) by Hieronymus Bosch, in which the world is a chariot of hay and everyone grabs as much as they can. While Bosch’s inspiration came from a Flemish proverb, to Nespeca it emerges from the ‘revolution’ that erased the monarchy and the feudal system in France and created the conditions for the rise of the democratic State, opening the way to modern history.
