“Sky was the first who ruled over the whole world. And having wedded Earth (…)” (Bibliotheca, book I, I).
In the chalcography, the two primordial gods are depicted with precise attitudes: proud Uranus is holding the universe with herculean strength whereas Earth, pregnant and pensive, is holding the globe with her left hand and with her right one she seems to be pointing at the imminent birth. In the myth, Uranus, the starry sky, impregnates Earth with rain: from their union the majority of the oldest cosmic elements in Greek mythology were born. They generated the Titans, the Cyclops and the Centimanes were born – and they were also depicted by Renato Coccia. (Alessandra Durante)
